Our Own Special Language: Coupon Lingo
- AY - Stands for All You magazine. This is a magazine which is only sold at Walmart or by subscription. Since it generally contains a ton of coupons, bloggers and coupon databases will reference the coupons in here along with the ones in the Sunday newspaper inserts.
- B1G1 or BOGO - Buy One, Get One Free
- B2G1 - Buy Two, Get One Free
- B1G2 - Buy One, Get Two Free
- Blinkies - Manufacturer coupons that come out of the little machines with attention-catching (blinking!) lights which you’ll find stuck to the shelf in a store.
- CAT or Catlina – This is a coupon that you receive at the end of your shopping order good for money off your next order or for money off a particular (basically to be used like cash). You can also receive coupons for products that are CAT’s. They print out of the Catalina machine, thus the name. A coupon that prints out of a separate machine by the register after you purchase
- Cherry picking - Purchasing only the best deals at a given store, or going from store to store to buy only the best deals at each.
- CRT – Cash Register Tap
- Couponer - Someone who uses coupons.
- ECB - Extra Care Bucks. The slip of paper good for a certain amount on any future purchase at CVS
- ESR – Easy Saver Rebate @ Walgreens
- ETS - Excludes Trial Size
- FAR – Free After Rebate
- GC - Giftcards
- GM – General Mills Insert
- Hangtags - Coupons that are hanging from the necks of products in the store.
- IP - Stands for “Internet Printable.” Coupons you can print from the Internet and use in a physical store. Also called “printable.”
- IVC – Instant Value Coupon 9Walgreens store coupon, found in Walgreens Easy Saver catalog & in store tear pads)
- MFR or MQ - Stands for “manufacturer,” as in “mfr. coupon.”
- MIR - Stands for “Mail In Rebate.”
- NED- No expiration Date
- Newbie - Someone who is new to a given online community or new to couponing.
- OOP – Out of pocket
- Overage - The happy situation that occurs when you are able to use a coupon worth more than the price of the product, giving you “extra” towards the rest of the items in your order. Remember that overage is a privilege; many stores have a policy of adjusting coupon amounts down to the actual item price and they are within their rights to do so.
- OYNO - On your next order
- OYNSO - Stands for “on your next shopping order.” See OYNO.
- Peelies - Coupons that are stuck onto a product in the store; you “peel” these off in order to use them.
- P&G – Procter & Gamble Insert
- PP - Stands for “participating products.”
- Q or CPN - Stands for “coupon.”
- PSA – Prices start at
- Roll – Using a CAT(or Extra Bucks, or Register Rewards) from one deal to purchase products from the same deal and produce a new CAT.
- RP – Red Plum Insert (formerly known as V/Valassis)
- RR – Register Reward. The CAT you receive from Walgreens.
- Stack – Usually in reference to an Instant Savings or CAT deal, this means that the deal will work for more than one grouping of the products in the same transaction. You can do the deal multiple times in the same transaction and it will produce more than one instant savings/CAT.
- SS – Smart Source Insert
- SP - Stockpile
- Tearpads - Coupons that you tear off of a pad, usually found by displays in-store.
- WYB – When you buy
- WQ - Wags Coupon
- YMMV – Your mileage may vary. This means that different rules may apply at different stores, usually depending on the manager.
